Pedestrian Accidents

Overview

Slip, trip and falls are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents in New York City.  They happen as a result of snow and ice on streets and sidewalks, poor lighting inside and outside of buildings, potholes, broken, cracked, raised, unleveled sidewalks, stairs, steps, street surfaces and in parking lots.  Slip, trip and falls can be extremely dangerous, especially for the elderly, and cause serious injury, even death.
    
Knockdowns and hit-and-run accidents are an even more dangerous, and increasingly deadly type of pedestrian accident, in a city where walking is the dominant mode of transportation.
    
Victims of slip, trip and fall accidents may be able to sue the property owner, landlord, managing agent, general contractor, whichever person or persons are responsible for creating the unsafe condition, or who allowed it to remain without repairing or fixing the problem.   

Claims for damages also can be brought against a state, county, city or other municipality when an accident occurs on government-owned property, like in New York City subways.  But lawsuits against government entities are more complicated than suing a private person or a business.
